Emmanuel Day School Behavior and Discipline Policy

The Emmanuel Day School believes very firmly in clear, behavior management techniques that are suitable for preschoolers. Children are praised routinely for positive choices and accomplishments. Children are never criticized, humiliated, intentionally embarrassed, or excluded in order to solve behavior problems.

Children are always given choice/consequence as their option in making their decision on how to change inappropriate behavior. We believe when the child is prepared to what may be their outcome he will learn to choose the appropriate or suitable behavior for the

situation that he’s in at that moment, thus retaining the outcome for a future time. This is called learning to be disciplined. This is not punishment. Consequence, as we prefer to call it, is the choice the child makes when exhibiting appropriate or inappropriate behavior that he has already been made aware of.

The Emmanuel Day School staff will always use redirection of behavior as its first option, and then consequences will be presented. We tend to not make “time out”, or as we prefer, “taking a break”, the first choice in disciplining, as we feel it is over used at home, schools and other environments. (At times, completely ineffective).

Remember, the Emmanuel Day School is always striving to encourage independence whenever possible. Learning to differentiate appropriate behavior from inappropriate is part of the learning process for life. If “time out” does occur we will use the child’s age/minutes theory in a safe area close to a supervising adult. We do not like to use a specific chair/area per say, for “time out”, as we do not want to create anxiety and association in a particular area of the school. A written note about the event will be sent home so you may review this that day with your child.

The Three Strikes Policy at The Emmanuel Day School is designed to protect a variety of harmful situations here at the school/church. For times when we encounter extremely disruptive behavior which we consider to be: A danger to the child, a danger to another student or staff member, or intentional destructive behavior to the property at Emmanuel Church, Newport, RI., the child and his family will undergo proceedings that begin the Three Strikes Policy.

The 1st Strike will result in a meeting with the child, parent, director, staff involved, and the Rev. Cole in going over the behavior and why it is considered inappropriate, dangerous, and destructive. The 2nd Strike will result in another meeting with a recommendation to the parent to take action at home. The 3rd Strike will result in removal from our program without a refunded deposit or your month’s tuition.

Physical abuse to another child or staff member is a very serious offense which we do not take lightly at the Emmanuel Day School.
